Spittelberg is Vienna’s most intact Baroque neighborhood district, a grid of narrow cobblestone lanes in the 7th District directly behind the MuseumsQuartier. The 17th and 18th-century building fabric survived because the area spent the 20th century as a low-rent district and was nearly demolished before citizen activism won preservation status in the 1970s. Today it is one of Vienna’s best evening neighborhoods: small galleries, independent restaurants, wine bars, and one of the city’s most atmospheric Christmas markets running late November to December 23.
