Vienna is Austria’s capital, its largest city, and one of the country’s nine federal states. Six centuries as the Habsburg seat made it one of Europe’s most culturally dense cities: the Hofburg, Ringstrasse, Kunsthistorisches Museum, Staatsoper, coffeehouses, and wine taverns all belong to the same unusually layered urban story.
Plan three to four days for the essentials, or longer if the museums matter to you. Direct trains connect Vienna with Salzburg, Munich, Prague, Budapest, and other Central European capitals, which makes it a natural arrival point and itinerary hub. The city-state boundary still matters: Klosterneuburg, Baden bei Wien, the Wachau, and most countryside day trips are in Lower Austria even when they are reached from Vienna.
