Zitrusgarten

Austria's largest citrus collection is in Carinthia, at Faak am See, which is not a location you would predict for a serious collection of lemons, oranges, kumquats, and over 400 citrus varieties.

The Zitrusgarten at Faak am See is Austria’s largest citrus collection, with over 400 varieties growing in Carinthia’s mild lakeside microclimate. The Faaker See area is one of the warmest and most sheltered parts of Austria, and the combination of alpine scenery and lemon and orange trees in flower is genuinely unexpected. The collection has been developing since the 1990s and includes varieties rarely seen outside of specialist botanical gardens. Open primarily spring through autumn; check current hours before visiting. Faak am See is about 12 km east of Villach, which is on the main Salzburg-Ljubljana rail line. Pair with the Faaker See itself for a half-day combining the garden and the lake.
