The Zillertaler Höhenstrasse runs 48 km along the western ridgeline above the Zillertal, between 1200 and 1700 meters, with direct views east across the valley to the Zillertal’s high peaks. The road passes through active alp farming country; the huts along the route are working farms, not heritage sites. Car required; access from several western valley floor villages including Strass, Uderns, and Kaltenbach. Open approximately June to October; check conditions before driving. Half to full day; drive south-to-north for afternoon light on the peaks. The road is narrow in sections. A genuine Zillertal experience that the valley floor and the ski areas do not give.
