Zillertalbahn

The Zillertalbahn is a narrow-gauge railway that has been running from Jenbach on the Inn valley main line up to Mayrhofen in the Zillertal since 1902. It is 32 kilometers and takes about 52 minutes. On selected days it runs steam locomotives on the same route, which makes the journey considerably more atmospheric and considerably slower. Check the steam calendar at zillertalbahn.at before booking if the steam experience is what you want. Regular diesel service runs year-round. Jenbach is 40 minutes from Innsbruck and 1.5 hours from Salzburg on the main line, and the Zillertalbahn platform is directly adjacent to the arrival platform. Single tickets approx. EUR 8-15; day passes available. The train is used by locals daily, not just tourists, which keeps the experience from feeling like a museum piece even on steam days.
