Mayrhofen is the main town in the Zillertal, one of Austria’s most visited ski valleys, sitting 20 kilometers below the Hintertux Glacier which offers skiing every single day of the year. The valley is connected to the Innsbruck-Salzburg mainline by the Zillertalbahn narrow-gauge railway from Jenbach, with the journey taking about an hour. The ski area combines four separate mountain areas (Penken, Ahorn, Rastkogel, Eggalm) plus the separate glacier. Hotels range from budget pensions to four-star wellness properties, and the town center has an active bar and restaurant scene that concentrates most of the valley’s evening energy. Summer hiking in the valley is genuinely good, with the Zillertal Alps Nature Park offering high-altitude routes above the agricultural valley floor. Book early for Christmas and February peak weeks.

Mayrhofen
The Hintertux Glacier at the head of the Zillertal offers skiing every day of the year, and Mayrhofen is the main town in the valley, 20 kilometers back from the glacier at the point where the valley is wide enough to hold a real town.
