The Zillergründl reservoir sits at 1770 meters above Mayrhofen, completed in 1986 as part of the Verbund pumped-storage hydroelectric complex. The water is glacial turquoise from rock flour suspended in the meltwater, surrounded by Zillertaler Alps peaks above 3000 meters. The dam wall itself is worth seeing for the engineering scale; the lakeside is accessible for walking. From Mayrhofen, 20 km by car up the Zillergrund road; no public transport. Accessible approximately June to October. Plan 1 to 2 hours. The color is most intense in summer afternoons when glacial melt peaks.
