Wienerwald

The Wienerwald, Vienna Woods, is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that begins at Vienna’s western city limits and extends through over 1,000 square kilometers of beech and oak forest into Lower Austria. You can reach it by U-Bahn. Take the U4 to Heiligenstadt, then bus 38A to Kahlenberg, and you are at 484 meters looking over the Danube valley within 45 minutes of the city center. The trails are well-marked and free. The landscape is historically dense: it was from the Kahlenberg ridge that the relief army broke the Ottoman siege of Vienna in 1683. Johann Strauss composed his most famous waltz about this forest. And the vineyard villages on the southern slopes, Grinzing, Neustift am Walde, Nussdorf, are where the Viennese Heuriger tradition is most concentrated. A Heuriger is a wine tavern where the farmer-winemaker sells their own Grüner Veltliner or Wiener Gemischter Satz directly, usually in a courtyard setting, under a legal right established in 1784. The Wienerwald gives you forest, history, and local wine, all within an afternoon from Vienna’s center.
