The Wiegensee above Gaschurn in the Montafon is a Natura 2000 protected high moor at over 1600 meters, one of the rarer ecosystems in the Alps: a living peatland with sundews, cotton grass, and specialized bog mosses formed over thousands of years. Free access; stay on the marked paths to protect the peat surface. Above Gaschurn, which is at the upper Montafon, accessible by Montafonerbahn rail from Bludenz and then local bus. Plan 1 to 2 hours. Most visually striking in late summer. A specialist nature destination rather than a mainstream hiking stop.
