The Walmendingerhorn at 1,990 meters above the Kleinwalsertal in Vorarlberg is reached by gondola from Mittelberg and gives a panorama across the Allgäu Alps from Bavaria to the Swiss border. The Kleinwalsertal itself is one of the more unusual places in Austria: an Austrian valley accessible only from Germany, reached through Oberstdorf in Bavaria, with Austrian administration but German economic integration. The cable car runs in summer and winter and brings the summit views to non-technical walkers; the ridge trails above are more serious. Getting there requires going through Oberstdorf first, so it is most natural for visitors already in the Allgäu region or planning a cross-border itinerary between Vorarlberg and Bavaria.
