Wallenstein Palace and Garden

Albrecht von Wallenstein built the first Baroque palace in Prague in the 1620s while simultaneously commanding the Habsburg armies across Central Europe during the Thirty Years' War, and the palace's scale tells you something about his estimation of his own importance.

The Wallenstein Palace garden in Prague’s Malá Strana district is open free of charge from April to October and is one of the most historically loaded garden spaces in Central Europe. Albrecht von Wallenstein built the first Baroque palace in Prague in the 1620s, demolishing 23 houses to do so, while simultaneously commanding the Habsburg armies across the Thirty Years’ War. The formal garden has a loggia, an artificial stalactite wall, and bronze sculpture copies; the originals were taken to Sweden in 1648 when Swedish troops sacked the city. Peacocks roam the grounds. The palace itself is now the Czech Senate. Enter from Valdštejnská street, 5 minutes from Malostranská metro. The garden is quiet on weekday mornings and gives you a very specific window into what Baroque power performance looked like when it was new.
