Prague is the most natural extension from Vienna for travelers heading north through Central Europe. Direct RegioJet and OBB trains from Wien Hauptbahnhof cover the 330 kilometers in about 4 hours, with multiple daily departures and affordable fares if booked in advance. Prague served as the second capital of the Habsburg Empire for centuries, and the Bohemian Baroque architecture in the city shares DNA with what visitors have already seen in Vienna, Salzburg, and the Austrian abbeys. For context, the same Counter-Reformation impulse that built Salzburg Cathedral and Stift Melk also built the Prague churches and palaces. Plan 2-3 nights to do justice to the historic core. Shoulder season (April-May, September-October) is significantly more pleasant than the summer peak.
