The Volksgarten, opened in 1823 on the rubble of city walls Napoleon’s troops demolished in 1809, was Vienna’s first public garden designed specifically for citizens rather than repurposed from royal grounds. The Theseus Temple (a replica of the Athens original, built 1823 by Peter von Nobile) once housed a Canova sculpture now in the Kunsthistorisches Museum.
