The Vienna State Opera, known in German as the Wiener Staatsoper, is one of the world’s great opera houses by any measure: roughly 350 performances a season across 60 different works. It opened in 1869 on the Ringstrasse, Vienna’s grand imperial boulevard; neither architect lived to see opening night. The building was bombed heavily in 1945 and rebuilt, reopening in November 1955. Standing-room tickets sell for EUR 3 to 4, released 80 minutes before curtain at the box office. Seat tickets for popular productions should be booked weeks ahead. Guided tours run daily and are worth doing for the grand staircase and foyer alone.
