The Vermuntsee is a high-altitude reservoir at 1,743 meters in the inner Montafon, built in 1930 as part of the Illwerke hydroelectric system. The Silvretta peaks rise behind the lake; the Vermuntbahn cable car from Partenen gives access to the higher terrain. The Silvretta Hochalpenstrasse connects the Vermuntsee to the higher Silvretta Stausee and crosses to Tyrol’s Paznaun Valley: one of the most scenic toll road drives in Austria.
