The Traunsee is Austria’s deepest lake at 191 meters, and the depth gives it a visual weight that the shallower Salzkammergut lakes don’t have: dark blue-green water that barely shifts color in the afternoon sun. The Traunstein rises almost straight from the eastern shore to 1,691 meters, creating one of the sharpest lake-mountain contrasts in Upper Austria.
