Gmunden sits at the northern end of the Traunsee, the deepest lake in Austria, and the Seeschloss Ort, a castle on an island connected to the shore by a wooden bridge, defines the lakefront. Gmundner Keramik, the ceramics workshop producing folk-patterned wares since 1492, is both a working factory and a visitor attraction. The town also runs what is recognized as the world's shortest public tram line (105 meters). Lake boat services reach Traunkirchen and Ebensee in summer. About 50 minutes from Linz and 1 hour 20 minutes from Salzburg by car.
