The Toplitzsee above the Grundlsee in Styria is 103 meters deep and was used by SS units in April 1945 to dump Operation Bernhard counterfeit British currency, printing plates, and other materials as the Reich collapsed. Recovery expeditions have continued since 1945. The lake is reached by 45 minutes on foot from the Grundlsee eastern shore, or by seasonal boat service; there is no road access. Allow a half day. From Bad Aussee by car to the Grundlsee, then walk or boat. The landscape is dramatic; the history is darker than most Austrian lakes.
