Romans crossed the Tauern mountains two thousand years ago on a route that passed through what is now the Tauerntal valley above Mallnitz. A cultural walk along the valley traces this Roman road heritage with informational panels, linking the modern landscape to an Alpine transit corridor that predates the Habsburg empire by over a millennium.

The Tauerntal above Mallnitz carries a history much older than the Habsburg railway tunnel beneath it. Romans used this valley as part of a mountain crossing between Noricum (modern Austria) and Italy, and a cultural walk along the valley floor marks the route with informational panels about the Roman road and the Alpine transit corridor it represented. The walk is free, runs through Hohe Tauern National Park scenery, and takes a half-day at a relaxed pace. Combine it with the Tauernbahn Station in Mallnitz to see two thousand years of Alpine engineering in the same afternoon.
