Mallnitz

Mallnitz is a small Carinthian mountain village that sits at the southern end of the Tauern railway tunnel connecting it to Bad Gastein in Salzburg state, 12 minutes away by train. The village is one of the quietest entry points into the Hohe Tauern National Park, with the Ankogel cable car reaching 2,636 meters above the valley floor and giving access to serious alpine hiking terrain. Car drivers can load their vehicle onto the Autoverladung train and pass through the tunnel, avoiding the mountain road entirely. For hikers and mountaineers who want national park access without the Grossglockner road crowds, Mallnitz delivers the same landscape at a fraction of the visitor numbers. Stay 1-2 nights in summer as a hiking base, or use it as a transit point on a south-north Salzburg-Carinthia route.
