The Tauernbahn Station at Mallnitz is the Carinthian terminus of one of the Habsburg Empire’s great engineering achievements. When the Tauern Railway opened in 1909, it carried trains through an 8.4-kilometer mountain tunnel that cut directly through the main Alpine ridge, and the car-carrying train service through that same tunnel still runs today. Arriving in Mallnitz from Böckstein in Bad Gastein by car train is one of the more unusual rail experiences in Austria: you drive onto a flatcar, the tunnel swallows you, and you emerge in a different province. The station building itself is worth a look for its Habsburg-era state railway architecture before you head into the national park.
