Tamsweg Marktplatz

Tamsweg's main market square is the center of the Lungau regional capital, a small town in Salzburg's highest and most isolated valley.

Tamsweg’s Marktplatz is the center of the Lungau regional capital, surrounded by the painted facades and wrought-iron inn signs typical of Salzburg provincial market towns. The square is the stage for the Lungau’s folk traditions, most notably the Samson parade where enormous figures are carried through town on single bearers, a custom with UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status. Tamsweg is accessible by the Murtalbahn narrow-gauge railway, one of Austria’s more scenic rural rail lines. Worth a stop if you’re passing through the Lungau between the Radstadt and Katschberg routes.
