Tamsweg is the capital of the Lungau, the most isolated valley district in Salzburg state, sitting at 1,000 meters altitude in an enclosed alpine basin. The town is the center of the Samsonumzug tradition: a procession of a giant Samson figure carried through the streets at Corpus Christi and again in August, recognized as UNESCO intangible cultural heritage and unique to the Lungau. The Wallfahrtskirche St. Leonhard above the town is a late Gothic pilgrimage church with notable stained glass. Getting here requires a car or bus from Radstadt or St. Michael im Lungau; the remoteness is part of the character. Plan 1-2 nights and time the visit around the procession if the dates align. The Lungau biosphere reserve walking trails are well-marked from Tamsweg for summer hiking.
