The South Styrian Wine Road (Suedsteirische Weinstrasse) runs 25 kilometers through vineyard hills along the Slovenian border between Ehrenhausen and Leutschach, passing Buschenschank farm wine taverns that serve cold platters and locally produced white wines. The landscape of terraced vineyards and spinning Klapotetz bird-scarers is the closest thing Austria has to Tuscany. The whites here, especially Sauvignon Blanc and Gelber Muskateller, are among Austria’s best. A Buschenschank is a seasonal farm tavern licensed to sell only its own wine and cold food, making them genuinely local rather than tourist-oriented. Best in September-October for harvest or April-May for spring blossoms. By car from Graz in about 45 minutes.
