Styria is Austria’s second-largest Bundesland (federal state), stretching from Dachstein glaciers in the north to the wine hills of southern Styria on the Slovenian border. Graz is the capital and cultural anchor, holding one of Austria’s best-preserved Renaissance and Baroque city centers. The Schladming-Dachstein ski region dominates the northwest. The South Styrian Wine Road and the pumpkin seed oil farms of the southeast offer a completely different face. High-speed rail from Vienna to Graz takes about 2.5 hours. The state is large enough to require 7-14 days to explore seriously.
