Stille Nacht Museum Oberndorf

Also known as Stille Nacht Museum

A small museum adjacent to the Stille Nacht Kapelle documenting the creation and global spread of Silent Night. The exhibition covers Joseph Mohr, Franz Xaver Gruber, and how a simple Christmas carol became the most translated song in the world.

Stille Nacht Museum at Stille-Nacht-Platz 7 in Oberndorf documents the creation of Silent Night in 1818 and the song’s spread globally before anyone knew who composed it. The authorship mystery lasted decades until Gruber’s own documented account confirmed his role in 1854. Adjacent to the Stille Nacht Kapelle; combine both in one visit. Approximately EUR 4-6; check stillenacht.at for current hours. Local train from Salzburg in about 20 minutes.
