Oberndorf bei Salzburg is where Silent Night was first performed on Christmas Eve 1818. The original St. Nikolaus Church no longer stands, having been demolished in 1913 after repeated flooding, but the small Stille-Nacht-Kapelle memorial chapel marks the exact site. The Stille-Nacht-Museum documents the story of Franz Xaver Gruber and Joseph Mohr. S-Bahn from Salzburg takes about 20 minutes. Most visitors spend 2-3 hours here. The annual ceremony on December 24 is a genuine event and draws visitors who have traveled far specifically for it. Outside Advent season, the town is quiet and accommodation is limited; most people visit as a half-day trip from Salzburg.
