A Benedictine abbey on a hill south of Krems, visible from across the Wachau. The baroque staircase with ceiling frescoes by Paul Troger is the interior highlight. The terrace restaurant offers one of the best elevated views of the Danube valley. Less crowded than Stift Melk and equally impressive in scale.

Stift Gottweig is a Benedictine abbey founded in 1083 on a hill above the Wachau, visible across the Danube valley toward Melk. The Baroque complex, designed by Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt, contains a grand staircase with ceiling frescoes by Paul Troger (1739) considered one of the finest Baroque interiors in Lower Austria. Less visited than Melk, which means less crowding. The terrace restaurant has one of the best views of the Danube and Wachau vineyards.
