Krems is the overnight base for the Wachau, the UNESCO-listed Danube gorge between Melk and Krems. The old town and the adjacent Stein district together give travelers medieval streets, wine cellars, and the Kunsthalle Krems contemporary art museum. The Danube cycling route connects Krems to Melk on one of Central Europe's most popular bicycle day trips. The Wachau wine region produces Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from the steep river terraces.
