Speicher Zillergründl

The Zillergründl reservoir sits at 1,780 meters in a sealed high valley at the head of the Zillertal, a 200-million-cubic-meter body of turquoise water backed by glaciated peaks. It was built for hydroelectric power in the 1980s and now doubles as one of the more dramatic scenic stopping points in the valley.

The water’s intense turquoise color comes from glacial flour in suspension. Access is by toll road from Mayrhofen; the road is open approximately May to October. Free to visit once at the reservoir. Plan for 1-2 hours, or longer if hiking the trail around the water. Combine with a visit to the Stilluppklamm gorge for a full day of alpine scenery in the Zillertal.
