The Spanish Riding School in Vienna has practiced classical dressage without interruption since 1572, making it the longest-running equestrian institution in the world. Performances take place in the Baroque Winter Riding Hall inside the Hofburg Palace, a chandelier-lit space stretching 55 meters without support pillars, designed by Fischer von Erlach and commissioned by Emperor Charles VI in 1729. The horses are Lipizzaners, bred at Bundesgestut Piber in Styria, born dark and turning white over years of training. Full performances cost EUR 30-130 and sell out well in advance; morning training sessions (Morgenarbeit) at EUR 15-20 offer a more relaxed and accessible alternative. Book through srs.at directly.
