The Tiergarten Schoenbrunn in Vienna’s Schoenbrunn Palace grounds is the world’s oldest continuously operating zoo, founded in 1752 by Emperor Franz I Stephan as an imperial menagerie and opened to the public in 1779. The original Baroque octagonal pavilion at the center of the grounds, where the Empress once breakfasted while watching exotic animals, still stands and functions as a cafe. Today the zoo consistently ranks among Europe’s top five for animal welfare and holds one of the most successful giant panda breeding programs outside China.
