Vienna’s Belvedere is two Baroque palaces and a terraced garden complex in the city’s third district, built by Prince Eugene of Savoy, the Habsburg military commander who led the campaigns that stopped Ottoman expansion into Central Europe. The Upper Belvedere (1722), designed by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt, holds one of Austria’s most important art collections, including Klimt’s “The Kiss” and major works by Schiele and Kokoschka. The Lower Belvedere (1714) houses changing exhibitions. The garden between them is free to walk and offers one of Vienna’s best planned vistas. Open daily from 9:00; combined tickets available. Book ahead in summer. Tram D stops directly at the gate.
