The Schleicherlaufen in Telfs is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage carnival procession held every five years (most recently 2025; next 2030) on the Sunday before Shrove Tuesday. Dozens of masked figure types process through the town, the most spectacular being the Roller figures with enormous hand-carved headdresses. Free to watch; tens of thousands attend. Telfs is 20 minutes from Innsbruck by regional rail. Accommodation in the region fills completely for the event; book at least six months ahead.
