Telfs

Every five years, Telfs hosts the Schleicherlaufen, one of the oldest and most elaborate carnival processions in Tyrol, in which costumed figures representing ancient masked archetypes parade through the town in a tradition that predates Christianity in the valley.

Telfs is an Inn valley town 25 minutes west of Innsbruck known primarily for the Schleicherlaufen, a major masked carnival procession held every five years (2025, 2030…) that is one of the oldest and most elaborate pre-Lenten traditions in Tyrol. Outside carnival years, the town serves as a practical and affordable base for the Inn valley with bus and train access to Innsbruck and the Seefeld plateau to the north. Limited tourist infrastructure makes it a local-character base rather than a resort. For travelers whose schedule intersects with the Schleicherlaufen, Telfs is worth building an itinerary around; book accommodation months in advance as the region fills quickly.
