Samsonumzug

Tamsweg hosts the main Samsonumzug, the formal procession of the giant Samson figure through the town on major Catholic feast days, primarily Corpus Christi and August 15th.

Tamsweg’s Samsonumzug is the principal procession of the UNESCO-listed Lungau giant-figure tradition, held on Corpus Christi (June) and August 15th through the town’s Altstadt. A single bearer carries the hollow 4-5 meter Samson figure through the streets accompanied by brass bands and attendant figures. Tamsweg is approximately 90-100 minutes from Salzburg via the Tauern Autobahn or the scenic Murtalbahn narrow-gauge railway. Accommodation books out on procession weekends; plan ahead. The August 15th event coincides with the pilgrimage to the hilltop St Leonard church above town.
