Ruine Thuerndl is a 13th-century fortification above Hallein, built to guard the Salzach valley salt trade route. Hallein has been a salt processing center since the Celtic period, and the Durrenberg above the town contains some of the oldest industrial salt mining works in Central Europe. Free access, always open, about 1 hour with the walk. Best combined with the Celtic Salt Mines on the Durrenberg for the full salt history context.
