Hallein is the salt town south of Salzburg whose Dürrnberg mines have been mined since the Celtic period, around 600 BC. The Salzwelten mine tour inside the mountain includes the original miners’ slides. The Celtic Museum at the base covers the extraordinary Dürrnberg archaeological finds that helped define the “Hallstatt period” of early Iron Age Europe. The old town on the Salzach riverfront is compact and walkable, cheaper and quieter than Salzburg. S-Bahn connects to Salzburg in about 20 minutes. A natural pairing with the Golling waterfall and the broader Tennengau valley.
