The Rotes Tor is Spitz an der Donau’s 13th-century town gate, built from the red-tinted local slate (Spitzer Schiefer) that also gives the Wachau wines their mineral character. The gate is the most visible remnant of the fortifications that protected Spitz’s Danube toll rights.
