Spitz an der Donau sits in the heart of the Wachau, Austria’s most important Danube wine region (UNESCO-listed), surrounded by the terraced Grüner Veltliner and Riesling vineyards that define this 36km stretch of river valley. The village is quieter than Duernstein and Weissenkirchen and hosts working Heurige wine taverns where the wine is poured by the growers. Getting here without a car involves the Westbahn to Krems and then cycling or taking the local bus; the seasonal Danube boat also stops here. Plan 1-2 nights.
