The Ringstrasse is Vienna’s four-kilometer ceremonial boulevard, built between 1865 and the early 1900s on the site of the demolished medieval city walls. Emperor Franz Joseph I oversaw the construction of the Vienna State Opera, Parliament, Rathaus, Kunsthistorisches Museum, Burgtheater, and University along its length, each in a different historical architectural style chosen to express its institutional purpose. Free to walk; trams 1 and 2 circle the full route. Allow 1-2 hours on foot or take the tram for an overview.
