The Prater Hauptallee is a four-kilometer dead-straight chestnut avenue through the center of Vienna’s largest public park, opened by Joseph II to the public in 1766 after centuries as a Habsburg hunting reserve. Free and always open. The avenue runs from the Wurstelprater entrance to the Lusthaus, an 18th-century octagonal pavilion still operating as a restaurant at the far end. Best experienced by bicycle. U1 to Praterstern. In spring, the chestnut bloom is one of Vienna’s best free sights.
