The lighthouse at Podersdorf am See is Austria’s only functioning lighthouse, serving the sailing traffic on the shallow Neusiedlersee. The lake, a steppe body of water with no natural outflow and a maximum depth of 1.8 meters, is Central Europe’s only steppe lake and one of Europe’s largest reed beds. Podersdorf, with reeds cleared to create a harbor and beach, is the main sailing and watersports center on the Austrian shore. The lighthouse is free to view at the harbor. Train from Vienna to Podersdorf am See approximately 1.5 hours via Neusiedl am See.

Podersdorf Lighthouse
Podersdorf am See has a lighthouse. This is unusual enough to require explanation: Austria is landlocked, and the Neusiedlersee is a shallow steppe lake with a maximum depth of about 1.8 meters and an extensive reed belt around most of its shore.
