The pletna is a traditional flat-bottomed boat, rowed standing by a single oarsman, that has been crossing Lake Bled to the island since at least the 12th century. The 22 families who operate the boats hold hereditary rights granted originally by the medieval Bishops of Brixen. The 20-minute crossing is the only way to reach the island church. Approximately EUR 16-18 per person return. Boats depart from the main promenade in Bled when full, year-round. Allow 1.5 hours for crossing, the island, and return.
