Lake Bled is one of the Alpine world’s most recognizable landscapes: island church, cliff-top medieval castle, and Julian Alps reflected in emerald water. It is in Slovenia, 45 minutes from Villach by car. The cream cake (kremšnita) served at the lakefront hotels since the 1950s is a local institution. The island is reached by traditional wooden boat. Summer crowds are heavy; early morning visits are significantly better. The Vintgar gorge 4km away is a good extension. Combine with Ljubljana for an overnight Slovenia circuit from Carinthia.

Lake Bled
Lake Bled is one of the most recognizable Alpine lake images in the world: a small island with a Baroque church, a medieval castle on a 100-meter cliff above the far shore, and Julian Alps peaks in the background. The lake is in Slovenia, 45 minutes by car from Villach in Carinthia, and is genuinely as beautiful as the photographs suggest.
