St. Veit’s church in Krems, first documented in 1284, has a Gothic exterior that conceals a richly decorated Baroque interior with ceiling frescoes by Kremser Schmidt (Martin Johann Schmidt, 1718-1801), the most prolific Austrian Baroque painter of his era. The golden high altar and the frescoes make this one of Lower Austria’s better Baroque interiors. Krems sits at the eastern entrance to the Wachau and is well connected by rail from Vienna (1 hour).
