Leoben’s Pestsäule (plague column) on the Hauptplatz was erected in 1718 following the plague epidemics that devastated Styria. These tall Baroque sculptural monuments were built across Catholic Central Europe as communal acts of thanksgiving, and Leoben’s sits in one of the region’s better-preserved market squares. Free and always accessible. Leoben is also where Napoleon signed the preliminary peace of 1797 and home to the Montanuniversität, one of Europe’s oldest mining universities. Worth a stop between Graz and the Alpine regions.
