Leoben is where Napoleon signed the preliminary peace treaty with Austria in 1797 that ended his first Italian campaign. The Mur valley town has been the commercial center of Upper Styrian iron country since the medieval period and the Montanuniversität, founded in 1840 to train mining engineers, still shapes the city's character. The Göss Abbey and its brewery, operational since around 1020, is Austria's oldest. The Erzberg open-pit iron mine is 30 minutes by car. About 50 minutes from Graz by car or train.
