The Pasterze is Austria’s longest glacier, extending 8 kilometers along the Grossglockner at 3,798 meters. Reached from the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Hoehe viewpoint on the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, it is the most accessible large glacier in Austria. Recession markers along the trail to the ice show the 1856 glacier terminus and subsequent positions; the glacier has retreated approximately 4 kilometers since systematic measurement began. The Grossglockner road toll is approximately EUR 38 per car. Open May to November. Approach from Zell am See (north) or Heiligenblut (south).
