The Hohe Tauern National Park is the largest in the Alps: 1,856 square kilometers of glaciated high alpine terrain spanning three federal states, containing Austria’s highest peak (Grossglockner, 3,798m), the longest Eastern Alps glacier (Pasterze), and the highest uninterrupted waterfall in Europe (Krimml, 380m). The Grossglockner High Alpine Road cuts through the center of the park. Access is from multiple gateway villages including Heiligenblut (Carinthia), Krimml (west), and Mittersill (Salzburg). The Nationalparkwelten center in Mittersill is the best orientation point. Open year-round but best accessed June to September for hiking and the glacier road.
